A blog needs visitors (or traffic). If you want your affiliate programs to earn you revenue then you need qualified visitors looking for the products you promote in your post.

So how do you get the search engines to bring you those visitors ? With some blog SEO.

There are some ways to automate blog seo. If you have a wordpress blog there are a few blog seo plugins. However if you don’t understand why you need seo and how to seo your blog posts manually maybe you should hold off on the seo automation.

Quick and dirty tips (ok not really dirty) for blog post SEO

1) CONTENT - Google bots will read every word in each of your posts. For the best results you need at least 2-3 paragraphs and each post should relate to a specific topic. Know your topic ahead of time.

2) Know the keywords you need to include. You may think that ‘coupon organizer’ is the blog seo keyword that will get you the most qualifying traffic, but Google and the search engines HAVE the numbers. The KNOW what keywords people search.

So use a handy sidebar tool like Wordtrack SEO blogger or Google’s keyword generator and use the top searched keywords.

Using Wordtracker SEO Blogger on I typed in ‘grocery coupons’ and it gave me a list of 30 TOP searched keywords on Google to include

3) Title tags – The top keyword should be in your Title

i.e. Organize your ‘grocery coupons’ savings with the couponizer

4) Meta tags: Blog Seo means including your keywords in your meat tags along with a description using your blog SEO keywords. This is a bit harder in blogger or blogspot. There are many great videos on you tube explaining how to create SEO meta tags in blogger.

Good SEO is about quality content rich in keywords.

If you are creating content for a specific affiliate program, consider writing 2-5 posts at once, using a different but relevant ‘content idea’. Then schedule your posts over a three month period.

“How do I earn ad revenue on my blog or website?”

The answer in a nutshell is “Treat your blog or website as a business.” Of course that is pretty vague. So let’s break it down.

Item one. Transparency. Credible business practice number one. Let your customers (in your case visitors) know how you are. Don’t hide your contact details (yes not just a form or email – but your details. If you need to, get a PO box).

Item Two. Professionalism. This one word covers many areas including; your site or blog design, content, and business plan

Item Three: Industry knowledge. I do not mean the ‘ blogger world’. Internet Companies have been around for a long time. If you want to move past the ‘hobby blogger’ income level you need to be both a blogger AND a publisher.

Item THREE needs to come BEFORE you design your site layout. If you have already launched your blog or website template- then you just might need to look at a ‘relaunch’ to ensure your site meets industry Internet advertising standards.

When you ad sell space your website on a monthly basis, cpm, or even cpc. You can not rotate your images within the same site visit.

Here’s a handy tip about promoting Affiliate partner banners. -> You aren’t usually stuck within the same requirements of a more traditional banner ad buy.

There are TWO ways you can increase the umber of ads that can be viewed in ONE ad spot to a visitor.

1) A marque scroll

The image to the left shows this being used at http://www.her-media on the right bar. It scrolls the ads.

This is a simple piece of code placed before and after your banners html. It is a great way to feature some of your favourite or new programs while keeping them all in the top fold of your website. You can find the code at QuackIt.

2) Banner Rotator

A banner rotators will refresh the banner based on a per second interval that you set. Not all affiliate programs will allow this as like traditional online media buys, some want to track the visitor views based on a page view. My suggestion is to contact the affiliate manager of each program before using this technique.

I am happy to allow our affiliates to use an affiliate banner rotator IF it means our banners will be promoted within the top fold of the site template AND if this is not overused.

Rules of thumb :

1) You should NEVER have more then one affiliate banner rotator on a page. It is about finding a balance between monetizing your ad inventory and displaying quality content.

2) Always ASK your affiliate manager before you use an affiliate banner rotator and be prepared to show an example.

3) Make sure all the banners in the affiliate banner rotator are relevant to your page or site content and visitors.

This handy website offers you away to CREATE your banner rotator code on the fly – Banner Rotator Generator

Ten Marks has included some great custom banner sizes made just for blogs in their first banner campaign for their blogging affiliate partners.

The first is a blog post banner. This banner is 500 pixels wide and fits perfect at the top, bottom , or as a divider midway in a post.

The second takes the 125 button width and lengthens it. Typically, a 125 does not have enough space to create a call to action that will result in clicks or sales effectively. This is one of the reasons you don’t see 125 buttons used in main stream internet advertising media buys anymore.

These creative sizes will be included in all our banner sets in each of the programs managed by Her Affiliate manager and is just one of the ways we support our blogging partners.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to go register for Ten Marks’ affiliate partner program at Share a Sale.

As an affiliate you spend a lot of time promoting affiliate programs. One way of increasing conversions is to target your link and creative copy to the advertisers landing pages.

When an affiliate merchant changes a landing page it makes sense to modify your ad copy. The question is HOW do you know when an affiliate merchant changes their landing pages?

You might see a drop in the conversions from a specific offer, but there is another option. One that lets you know before you start losing sales.

Monitor the affiliate merchants pages. How do you do that? I have two suggestions for you.

The first is a remote service (much like Google Alerts). Simply enter the url and receive an alert by email when changes are made. Change Detection

The second is desktop software called Internet Owl. As of writing this post it is still free.

Why should you create a shortened link for your affiliate urls ? Because you need to be able to recall your links off the top of your head and typically affiliate urls are long and cumbersome.

Why you shouldn’t use a TEMPORARY service like bit.ly or tiny.url to do so ? Because these free services are not always 100% reliable and after you have spent hours of your time placing links in forums and directories or on your site when the link stops working all of those links will no longer work.

As a content manager, wordpress is user friendly, on the cutting edge with constant updates, and plugins for any development idea you may have.

As an affiliate, I suggest taking a look at the Pretty Link WordPress plugin. It is a must have plugin for every affiliate using wordpress.

What does the plugin do that you need as an affiliate?

* Gives you the ability to create clean, simple affiliate URLs on your website that redirect to any other affiliate URL
* Generates random 2-3 character slugs for your affiliate URL or allows you to name a custom slug for your affiliate URL
